Youth ends life after booked for harassing girl in Delhi
Haunted by guilt and shame and the prospect of a jail term, a youth committed suicide after he and his friend were arrested for allegedlyharassing a girl.
While 19-year-old Chandrakant Singh was found hanging in his room in south west Delhi's Fatehpur Beri area on December 25, his friend Sonu, also 19, consumed poison the same day but managed to survive. Both of them were students of ITI Nizamuddin.
Chandrakant's family members hinted at police excesses and said the boy was disturbed after returning from Mehrauli police station where an FIR had been lodged against the two youths for allegedly harassing a girl.
Chandrakant family alleged that the police had threatened and humiliated him to such an extent that he went into depression and took the extreme step.
The family members also alleged that they had paid a police officer Rs.10,000 so that Chandrakant is not booked under molestation charges.
On December 24 Chandrakant was arrested by Mehrauli police after a girl registered a harassment case against him and his friends.
The girl wrote in her complaint, "My friend and I take a bus to college? from Mehrauli bus stop. Every day these boys (Chandrakant, Sonu and Mohit) pass lewd comments at us. On December 24, we were waiting for our bus when they started passing lewd comments." The police claimed they received a PCR call that some people were beating up a youth after he was caught harassing a girl at a bus stop. A police team reached the spot and learnt that the youth was being beaten up by the girl's brothers and their friends.
They were brought to the police station where the girl formally lodged an FIR accusing the youth and two of his friends of harassing her. The youth was arrested and released soon after. A case was registered against the accused under section 509 of the IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) at Mehrauli police station. The youth committed suicide the next day, a police officer said.
The boy's father Navran Singh said: "I got a call from Mehrauli police station saying that my son has been arrested. I went to the police station and got him bailed out, but the cops kept him with them and took him to the complainant's college where they asked him to identify the other persons who had harassed the girl. Later in the evening he came back home but did not speak to anybody." Navran said the family members kept prodding the boy as to what had happened but he did not say anything.
"He was quiet and did not even eat. The next day we got a call from Mehrauli police station. The cops wanted Chandrakant to come to the police station to fix an electric board. I refused to let him go but they called up again asking for my son to be sent to the police station. At around 2 in the afternoon my younger daughter saw him hanging inside his room. We broke the door of his room and took him to the hospital but failed to save him," the boy's father said.
"Police had threatened him to such an extent that he had started thinking that something wrong would happen to him. He started crying and said I cannot bear this insult..." Chandrakant's brother Naveen claimed.
